Considering a newborn photoshoot but don't know what to expect?

Newborn photoshoots require a lot of patience and careful handling. A key attribute to a successful shoot is having relaxed parents. Babies feed of the energy of their parents. Being anxious and not knowing what to expect can transfer to the baby and so they find settling down difficult.

In order to achieve those sleepy, squishy, cosy poses I like to photograph a newborn within nine days of being born. This is the time during which they sleep the most and allows for safer posing. With this in mind, it is better to book a session before the baby is born after your 20 week scan. As soon as baby arrives you can contact me and we can arrange a suitable date. Photographing babies out of this time frame can be somewhat challenging, your baby could be experiencing a growth spurt and be uncomfortable or begin to loose hair.

I travel to your home for you and your baby’s comfort. I do ask for visitors to refrain from arriving during this time to allow for a smooth session without interruption.

I allocate a three hour timeslot to accommodate with feeds, breaks for the baby and set-up changes.  This does not mean I will be photographing constantly during those three hours. It all depends on how the baby is feeling that day. I also recommend not scheduling any other appointments immediately after the session, should we run over.

HOW TO PREPARE

It is a good idea to have the temperature in your home warmer than usual to help the baby settle.

I ask to work in a space near a source of light, preferably a large window or glass door. Normally I work on the floor or specialised newborn beanbag. At times I may ask to use a settee or bed. Please clear some space for me to work in.

As you are in the comfort of your own home it is not necessary to dress baby. I have found undressed babies ease into set-ups without the added discomfort of undressing, which some babies can find distressing. Providing a pacifier can help to sooth baby.

For siblings and pets it can be a long boring process, so having an extra pair of hands to take care of them would be beneficial. Should you wish for siblings/pets to be involved in the session, This is scheduled in towards the end of the session, should you wish, when you book a deluxe newborn package. Please consult me prior to the shoot so I can prepare for this.

Your baby’s safety is my upmost priority. I may ask parents to assist when needed.

PROPS

Props are provided as part of the package, of which I will discuss with you colour schemes or special requests. I generally bring more props than I need to suit your baby’s needs or personal preference. If you would like to include something special please inform me prior to the shoot so that I can plan set-ups.

Some parents like to chose colours that compliment their home. There are various colour palettes to choose from, including neutrals, pastels and vibrant colours.

I have a selection of newborn outfits, hats and headbands especially made for newborn photography.

POST-PRODUCTION

Post-production/editing can take between one and two weeks. This is where I spend time selecting the best images and enhancing them, removing blemishes and dry skin.

Once the photoshoot is over you can expect a sneak peek posted to my facebook and Instagram pages. These will be branded with my logo. I am happy for these to be tagged and shared with reference to my pages and website.

Edited images are uploaded onto a USB. The USB needs to be provided from yourselves. Alternatively, I can send your images via email.

PRINTING

At this time, I do not provide a printing service, however I strongly recommend that you get your images printed by a professional photographic lab, which you can find online. This is recommended to ensure true colour and archival quality prints.

I endeavour to provide the best service possible and to meet your needs. Should you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask.
